Israel began freeing 400 Palestinian prisoners on Thursday in a long-delayed gesture that Israel claims is designed at boosting moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. transpixel June 17, 2005- Mohammed al-Mahdi, 37, formerly named Michael Sharovsky leads Palestinian prayers at his house in the West Bank city of al-Khalil (Hebron). Mohammed al-Mahdi was born Jewish in Azerbijan, immigrated to Israel and lived as a Jewish settler in the nearby Jewish settlement of Kiryat Arba for nine years. In 1998 he converted to Islam and continued living in the settlement, where the Jewish settlers did not like him living amongst them. Al-Mahdi returned to Azerbijan as he married a Moslem woman and had four children before returning to al-Khalil this week- Photo by; Nayef Hashlamoun. transpixel
